And we’re back. And “Branded”.

January 18, 2008 at 8:42 pm | In Uncategorized | Leave a Comment

Welcome back, everyone! Our galleries are up and running again after an installation period. Two new shows are up:

in the Tisch Gallery, Branded and On Display, a collection of work by 21 artists exploring themes of marketing, merchandising, and branding. The show is curated by Ginger Gregg Duggan and Judith Hoos Fox (of Pattern Language fame).

in the Koppelman Gallery, New Media Wall, and Remis Sculpture Court: Ivan Navarro: No Man’s Land. Navarro is a Chilean artist who uses fluorescent light to create three-dimensional objects that reference Chilean history and themes of dislocation and transience.

Judy Fox will be giving a curator’s talk on January 31 at 6:30 pm. Join us!

Artists’ Talk, Thursday 12/6

December 5, 2007 at 5:12 pm | In Uncategorized | Leave a Comment

There was cotton candy. There was wrestling.

The MFA Thesis Exhibition opened last Thursday! And yes, the opening reception included the above two things. It was a party!

And this Thursday at 6 pm the Gallery will host the artists’ talk, an informal discussion with the thesis candidates about their work and exhibition. Event is free and open to the public! Come on down! Probably no cotton candy, though.

MFA Show opens tomorrow, 11/29

And we’re back! Just when you thought the blog was ending with the Kabakov show. Loyal Tufts readers, don’t fret. We’ll continue to bring you breaking news, important news, and not so important news. And totally trivial facts.

For example, I just looked at our blog stats and found that the most frequently used search term that leads people to our blog is “great stuff foam”. I mean, who knew? While I’m glad we’re filling that niche, I’m assuming there are a lot of people out there who just want to know where to get the stuff. I recommend Home Depot.

In other news, we have an opening coming up! The December 2007 MFA Thesis Candidate Exhibition opens tomorrow at 5:30 pm. Opening reception will feature the artists, their work, and free food and drink. Come one, come all!

The exhibition runs from 11/29 to 12/16. There is an artists’ talk next Thursday at 6 pm.

The Center of Cosmic Energy is on its way out the door! Thank you to all who came to see this huge, ambitious, exciting exhibition at the Gallery.

This blog will NOT be going anywhere – I will be resuming posting in a week, when all the de-installation excitement is over.

The next show opens on November 29 at 5:30 pm. MFA Thesis Exhibition for December.

Visitor commentary

October 22, 2007 at 5:11 pm | In Uncategorized | Leave a Comment

We’ve gotten a slew of comments lately here at the Gallery, which is great fun – and sometimes funny as well. Here’s the latest round:

“Rock on! Does it remind one of nuclear energy harnessed?”

“My ‘intuition’ tells me this is a cosmic joke. I’m waiting for someone to tell me I’ve been punk’d.”

“What’s wrong with being a little open-minded? I loved the exhibit and brought my parents back to see it with me.”

“What’s wrong? This is where my tuition money goes? I’ve been fleeced. The emperor has no clothes.”

Soviet exhibition at AIB

October 16, 2007 at 5:24 pm | In Uncategorized | Leave a Comment

It’s a convergence of all things Soviet! Lest you think that you won’t get your fill after our exhibition closes of that era…

The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University is hosting an exhibition of Soviet satellite photographs, by Jonas Bendikson. No info is posted on their site yet, but their marketing materials list the dates as 11/8-12/19.

In New York at the MoMA, the exhibition Lost Vanguard: Soviet Modernist Architecture, 1922-32 is about to close, on October 29th.

For those of you interested in the performing arts, the BSO has a Russian lineup in February. Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6.

Additional buildings that lean

We’re rounding into the final month of Kabakov here at the Gallery – hard to believe that this exhibition closes on November 11th! While I think of more erudite subjects to blog about, here’s a fast post of a relatively fun subject:

Buildings that Lean! It occured to me that our Communication with the Cosmos Building can’t be the only leaning structure around…I’ll hunt for local ones, but here are a few to get started:

The obvious choice, of course:

“The leaning tower of South Dakota”:

Viewer Comments, 2

October 3, 2007 at 5:44 pm | In Kabakov | Leave a Comment

I know, I know, it’s not Friday and I am breaking the rule I just set last week. But I’m a little hard-pressed to blog about something right now, so here are some more comments.

Don’t mess with Tatlin and Malevich.

I wish it were real.

You guys spent waaaayyy too much money on this.

I want my 20 minutes back.

Apparently today’s theme is “Disgruntled Customers of the Center of Cosmic Energy.” In response to the “I wish it were real” comment, this exhibition is as real as you want it to be. The Kabakovs have a vision and we’ve built it – the rest is up to the viewer.

To go along with that message, one thing to take away from this exhibition is that there is no right or wrong answer to the question of “is this for real?”. Your knowledge of the Gallery and the actuality of The Center of Cosmic Energy aside, I think the real message behind the exhibition is that we are all encouraged to envision a world where cosmic energy is accessible, and where “utopia” can exist.
